Microworlds are learning tools, used in critical thinking,
mental development, discovery and also to promote problem solving. The
Microworld environment can create engaging environments for student learning
based in Constructivist principles. The principles that are of Constructivist
nature are active participation, discovery, knowledge construction and learning
contexts to name a few.
Microworlds are real world environments that are interactive
and dynamic. They contain programmable objects that can be manipulated and
studied. Microworlds are commonly used in mathematics and science. They were
developed in the educational world for the purpose of aiding Business and
Management. The concept of Microworlds has come to represent any simulation in
which people can participate by running experiments, and testing strategies.
Common representations of Microworlds include management flight simulators,
business simulators and learning labs. The ultimate objective of using Microworld as a tool in education is to
facilitate students toward deeper and more integrated understanding.
One example of a Microworld being utilized in education is
that of the “Logo Turtle Geometry” experiment. This model was used to
experiment with geometric concepts by manipulating a turtle that that follows
the commands of the user. Using the turtle as the manipulative, the user can
create procedures, and decompose spatial and logical problems into smaller more
manageable entities.
The Microworld definitely is a welcome addition to the
Constructivist family of learning models. Used properly, it can enhance
learning and provide students with engaging, stimulating experiences.
